The power of music…

You can hear a track and it will take you back to when you first heard it… the sights, smells, sounds and feelings…. It brings back emotion, memories but most of all it heals… and says more than what you could ever say… From now on, my posts will be minimal and i’ll let the music do the talking… This is the power of music…

Reflection

“When I reflect on the last 10 years, one question I ask myself is: why were we the ones to build this? We were just students. We had way fewer resources than big companies. If they had focused on this problem, they could have done it. The only answer I can think of is: we just cared more,”

Mark Zuckerberg

Failure.

The only real failure is the failure to try, and the measure of success is how we cope with the dissappointment, as we all must.

Old mate Sydney.

So i am back home in Sydney…. and for once…. i am REALLY happy to be home.

I have experienced some of the most amazing moments since being back home… from getting back into my fitness routine with early morning bush runs, to long walks along the coast with good friends, to becoming approved for my US visa, through to meeting my best friends “little man” for the first time.. These are all memories that i will cherish for a lifetime.

In the short week that i have been here, i have finally come to terms with this feeling ive had for SUCH a long time. The feeling of returning home.

Fate…

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.”

The bathroom incident…

“Relax…. Just relax….”  i was telling myself.

Here i was. Standing at a urinal in a busy restaurant bathroom… Unable to let go. Stage fright had set in.

“Dont panic… just dont think about it and it will come…” i kept saying in my head. The last thing i wanted to do was panic. That or turning to the guy next to me and saying “i cant pee…”

Its a funny thing… Mens urinals. There is certain etiquette that every guy follows when they enter into the little boys room. These are cardinal rules and breaking them is sacrilege.

Firstly, urinal selection is CRITICAL. You NEVER select a urinal next to someone unless you are absolutely forced to. Usually, you choose either end and even if there is only one guy at one end, you always end up choosing the furthest one away.

Secondly, you NEVER look down. Always look straight ahead. Looking down is a serious offence. Eye’s should always be front and centre.

Thirdly, Keep conversation to a minimum. The last thing you want to do is engage in lengthy conversation while sword fighting.

Last but not east, never do more than 2 shakes. More than 2 shakes is considered playing with yourself.

American’s and racism

A few days ago, i was on my way back from having a sunday debrief session with my friends in Santa Monica. I was on high spirits after spending a lovely day, hanging out in Santa Monica, drinking beers in the sun and analysing the week’s past events as well as the weeks upcoming events. I was travelling on the interstate 10 back to Pasadena and flying along the freeway at 75 mph.

Suddenly my car came to a screeching halt and i found myself in a tonne of traffic. Not unusual for LA to be completely honest, but today was different. There were people on the freeway. Now, if you havent been on the freeways here in California, this is something that never happens. Sure, someone may break down and get out of his car, but this is usually on the shoulder of the freeway. Oh no, not today!  There wasnt just 1 person on this freeway, there were dozens of people… holding up signs, masks over their faces and they were right in the centre of the freeway blocking any cars from going through… mine being one of them. They were yelling, screaming, protesting. I wound down my window and heard them chanting “Trayvon… Trayvon…Trayvon…”

When did we all grow up?

So i dont know about most of you… but i have a very strict morning habit/schedule/routine etc etc…

My alarm usually goes off at about 6am…. it then takes me a good 30 mins of whacking the snooze button to finally get my shit into gear. I usually rub my eyes and do this morning yawn noise that sounds like a lion having an asthma attack (do lions get asthma?). I jump into my running gear and go for an early morning run. I come back. I shower. I get changed. Enlightening story isnt it?

I then reach to my iphone and check my emails and stupid messages my mates back in Australia have sent me overnight… They usually range from seeing pictures of a girl who i was once seeing whilst i was back home (maybe its a way to try and lure me to come back to Sydney), to pictures of their dogs (yes, cliffy – you still are cute!) to advice and guidance about what cologne should they wear for certain situations that involve the female species. I then jump on facebook to see whats going on in my social world but even moreso, to keep in touch with whats going on back home in my social group of mates.

I think i’ve just been window-shopped.

Im outside on the back deck, sun beaming down from the brilliant blue LA sky, scenic mountains in the background, home made drip coffee in my hand. What a brilliant day it is to be alive.

In my other hand, my trusty iphone and on the other end of it is a recruiter from a big corporate asking whether it would be possible for me to fly to NYC for an interview.

“… so you’ll be meeting some senior level executives” she says and continues going on about who i’ll be meeting and their personalities and what they do for a living etc etc. I stop listening to the conversation as i start to think of the similarities between this and internet dating. Mind you, who knows what was going through my mind as ive never tried internet dating… Dont get me wrong, im not against it or anything… i just havent been in the situation to utilise it.
